The National Historic Cheesemaking Museum is located at the southern gateway to Wisconsin, just a few miles north of the Illinois/Wisconsin line. The staff eagerly awaits your visit to tell you the story of early cheesemaking which earned Monroe the title of the "Cheese Capital of the USA." During your visit, step inside the century old Imobersteg Cheese Factory to witness how cheese was made over a century ago. Each year on the second Saturday of June, join Master Cheesemakers and retired cheesemakers as they make a wheel of Swiss cheese, right before your eyes. Enjoy a video showing the cheesemaking process in today's cheese factories. From cow to cheese is our motto at Pagel's Ponderosa Dairy! come see the cows, visit our on-site cheese production facility and of course, taste a squeaky fresh cheese curd. Pagel's Ponderosa Dairy is the largest single family owned dairy in Wisconsin. The farm was established back in 1946 when John Pagels father Carl Pagel borrowed the money from a neighbor to buy the farm. Since then the farm has stayed in the family and is thriving with many generations to come! Take a tour of the Ponderosa and learn all about the latest innovations in milk production (735 - 750 cows are milked per hour!) and alternative energies. Watch the milk from our cows go to our cheese production plant to create a variety of cheeses. Group Friendly (Motorcoach) destination.
Renard's Cheese is a family owned and operated business since 1961. Master Cheesemaker Chris Renard is a third generation cheesemaker crafting cheese the old fashion way. Fresh cheese curds daily and a wide variety of handcrafted artisan cheese - Cheddars, Colby, Farmers, Muenster, Brick, Marble, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella string, Smoked string and over 50 flavor infused specialty cheeses. We offer Door County Gourmet products. Deli - dine in or take out. Factory tours are available by reservation.
Observation hall, 50 varieties of cheese, sausage. Widmer's Cellars are known for their Brick cheese - made the traditional way in the same open vats that cheesemaker Joe's grandfather bought in 1922. Joe is one of Wisconsin's Master Cheesemakers. The factory store and viewing area are open daily Monday through Friday between 6:30 am to 5 pm. Saturdays 7 am to 5 pm. During June through October open Sundays 10 am to 4 pm. Call ahead for guided tours - offered Monday through Friday at 9:30 am.
